Do you know how bad regular shampoo is for your health and your hair?
Most normal shampoos and shower gels contain an inexpensive detergent called Sodium Laureth Sulphate or SLS for short. This is commonly used in cosmetic cleansers, hair shampoos, bath and shower gels, bubble baths, etc. It is probably the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair care products.
In the cleaning industry SLS is used as a very corrosive chemical in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car wash soaps, etc.
SLS is used throughout the world for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on animals/humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.
A study at the University of Georgia Medical College indicated that SLS penetrated into the eyes as well as brain, heart, liver, etc., and showed long term retention in the tissues. The study also indicated that SLS penetrated young children's eyes and prevented them from developing properly and also caused cataracts to develop in adults.
SLS may cause hair loss by destroying the natural protective layer of the scalp and attacking the hair follicle. It erodes the skin’s natural protection and increases the chance that rashes, itchiness, fungal infections, dandruff and more general infections might occur.
Another extremely serious problem is the connection of SLS with nitrate contamination. SLS reacts with many types of ingredients used in skin products and forms nitrosamines (nitrates). Nitrates are potential cancer-causing carcinogens. Due to the alarming penetrating power of SLS, large amounts of these known carcinogens are absorbed through the skin into the body.
There are numerous other harmful substances used in regular and conventional shampoos. Every day, scientists are discovering new information about chemicals previously thought of as safe. Recent research has found that these very chemicals may be combining in our bodies in ways that scientists and medical experts have yet to identify, and whose harmful results have still not been officially declared.
Many cosmetic products are not good for the body, skin or hair. The best chance of staying healthy is to remain knowledgeable by reading the products’ labels and ingredients lists. Play it safe and use as many truly natural products as you can!
